PART ONE: INTO THE KAIROS

Kairos: A Greek noun. 1) An opening in time. 2) Defining moment.

Sarabeth’s, the popular Manhattan breakfast spot, was packed for Christmas Eve brunch. Friends and co-workers, still bundled in scarves and hats, exchanged extravagantly wrapped gifts over waffles, Eggs Benedict and mimosas. The windows were steamed and a cozy warmth filled the room, that looked out onto the wintery glow of a snow-covered Madison Avenue.

Paolo sat alone at a crowded center table, looking more like a model than a business man, in his gray wool slacks and fitted sweater. His blue eyes were widened with irritation. What was wrong with this woman?

He brushed his fingers through his thick black hair and then drummed them on the table. Nicky moved through the dining room and past him in a series of graceful, dance-like motions designed to avoid other servers, customers and tables, and completely ignored him. It had become a habit of hers, and Paolo was not used to being ignored—especially by women.

Several months before, meeting Nicky had been the most powerful jolt of his very long existence and the man who women chased, fell hard...on his face. Nicky scurried by him with a stack of dirty dishes and he lifted an elegant finger, hoping that she might finally acknowledge his presence.

Instead she looked past him and blurted, “You’re not in my section.”

“Your section was full,” he said, although she was already gone. He wanted a chance to compliment her new hair style—a short bob with long bangs. He wanted to tell her how the cut enhanced her pale complexion. The fact was that the combination of features, her nearly black hair, her complexion and her blue eyes were extraordinarily striking. But Nicky’s tiny frame wove between tables and customers and disappeared into the kitchen.

Katie, another server, brushed her hands along Paolo’s broad shoulders in a short massage before resting his head back against her ample breasts.

“Hey Paolo,” the blonde cooed seductively.

Noticing that Nicky had returned, Paolo raised his voice. “It appears this establishment is too busy to provide good service to all of its customers.”

Nicky rolled her eyes and started to say something, but Katie interrupted, “Nicky, if you’re too busy, I can take Paolo.” Katie was discussing the table, but the implication was clear.

Nicky sneered, clearly irritated. “He’s all yours!”

Smiling seductively, Katie posed in front of Paolo. “Now then...what would you like?”

Old habits die hard. Paolo leaned forward, glancing briefly to the exposed top of her breasts, with a half smile that most women found irresistible. But in fact, he had little interest in Katie. “Hmmm, what do you recommend?” he asked, with a twinkle in his eyes.

Katie lifted a knowing brow and leaned her arm on the table, better exposing her cleavage. “I have a few suggestions.”

Nicky passed and her tray “accidently” shoved Katie.

“Hey!” Katie bristled.

“Sorry,” Nicky said, raising her arms, in pretended innocence.

Katie’s face reddened as she turned to Nicky. “What’s the big deal? You said you weren’t interested.”

“As I said before, he’s all yours,” Nicky steamed and turned to take the order from a table right next to them.

“Paolo, let me order for you, and if you don’t LOVE every bite, I’ll owe you a drink...after work.” He was enjoying this game... Until a moment later when he heard a playful giggle.

Paolo whipped his head around to see Nicky flirting with a man that the other waitresses had excitedly identified as the star to a soap opera. The man was leaning over to whisper something to Nicky and she giggled and whispered something back to him.

Meanwhile Katie was informing Paolo of her favorite drink that promised to make her “lose all control”ose all control"f ck, laughing usly belonged to she dove to hide her emotions from him. . Paolo nodded, but wasn’t listening and in an instant was out of his chair and headed toward Nicky and the actor. Dejected, Katie stopped mid-sentence and went to tend another table.

“Excuse me, Nicky,” Paolo said.

“Wait your turn!” She snarled in response.

“I have been waiting my turn patiently, but you seem to have time for everyone else.”

The actor turned to Paolo, “Can I help you?”

“No. You cannot,” Paolo curtly dismissed him. “Cara, I must speak to you...alone.”

“Have a seat Paolo. Katie’s helping you, remember?”

She headed back toward the kitchen, pushing through the double doors, but Paolo followed.

She turned and glared. “You know you aren’t supposed to be in here.”

The manager, Maia, a no-nonsense New Yorker, stopped prepping plates. She placed a hand on her hip and lifted an authoritative finger to the door. “Paolo, out! And please stop harassing my servers.”

A waitress with brown and purple hair said, “Oh come on Maia. Paolo can harass me anytime.”

“Me too,” Another waitress said.

Paolo smirked and Nicky rolled her eyes.

A gay waiter passed Paolo and checked out his body. “Oh yeah. Me three.”

The cook placed two plates of Eggs Benedict under the heat lamps. Maia glanced at the ticket. “Nicky, table three is up.” The manager pointed to the door that led back into the dining room, “Paolo—Don’t make me eighty-six you.”

Paolo lifted his hands in question. “Eighty-six?”

“Permanently ban you from here,” Nicky said, flatly.

Offering an apologetic shrug to the manager, Paolo exited. Maia waited for the double doors to close and said, “Andrea, can you take out Nicky's order?”

“I can take my own,” Nicky argued.

Maia placed a hand on Nicky's shoulder and waited for Andrea to leave with the plates.

“What's going on with you and Paolo?”

“NOTHING!” Nicky bristled and then took a deep breath in an attempt to calm herself. “I'm sorry, Maia, but I have no idea why he keeps bothering me.” She folded her arms over her chest.

“He’s a good customer, but if that were the case I would have eighty-sixed him long ago.”

“What are you talking about? I swear I've never even gone out with him.”

“Maybe you should.”

“What? I wouldn't! He's a player. You saw how everyone in here was after him.”

“Yes, and I also noticed that you are the only one that he's interested in,” Maia said.

“He's slept with half the girls here.”

“Nah...” Maia said patiently.

“Veronica told me that her and her twin sister did a threesome with him.” Nicky rolled her eyes. “Why would I even think twice about him after that?”

Maia took Nicky's elbow and led her away from the line. “The reason is because Veronica isn't capable of telling the truth about anything except the daily specials...and she even has trouble with that. I'll bet Paolo doesn't even know her name, let alone have a guess about her real bra size. Besides,” Maia paused and raised a single brow, “by the way your face lights up when he comes in, I suspect you feel more for him than you're willing to admit.”

At this Nicky's jaw dropped in outrage. “Are we done?”

“I just think you should see him...after hours.”

“I don't want to see him at all.”

“Yeah, well notify your face,” Maia said. “That's all. Just consider it.” Nicky walked brusquely to the kitchen door as Maia finished, “It would sure make my life simpler.”

It would make her life simpler, Nicky thought, but what about the serious complications it would add to mine?

Paolo was calmly waiting as Nicky reentered the dining room. She again pushed past him and he followed.

“You know you’re getting me in trouble.” Nicky picked up some dirty dishes and dropped off a check and was on her way back to the kitchen.

As she passed him, he touched her arm. She froze, stunned by the electricity in his touch and her eyes locked on his.

“It is Christmas Eve. Cara, please give me a chance,” he said softly.

She worked to break her eyes away from the pleading in his. “I can’t.” She paused. Lies typically came easy to her anymore, but for some reason, not in this case and she tapped her foot and squirmed with discomfort. “A few of the girls are getting together tonight. I wouldn’t want to disappoint them.” Nicky nodded toward Andrea and Katie and then lifted a suspicious eye. “I think Veronica's going with us too.” She watched Paolo's face, but saw no recognition of the name. She pulled away and hid in the kitchen.

It was late afternoon when Sarabeth’s closed. Veronica and several other waitresses, exited the dark restaurant onto the street aglow with Christmas gaiety. They chatted excitedly about their plans.

Andrea, the girl with the brown and purple hair turned to the back door of the restaurant. “C’mon we're waiting for you!”

Nicky and Katie exited the restaurant. Katie smiled broadly and tightened her scarf . “I was afraid you were going to leave me behind,” she said, pushing her blonde hair over her shoulder.

One of the girls laughed. “Don't be silly! It's Christmas eve—and we're the A Team!”
Nicky kept her eyes down, avoiding any conversation. Alone, she walked down the snowy street without so much as a wave good-bye.

Synopsis

Can the Devil be Forgiven?

Everything is fun and games till someone gets hurt, and what Jameson Kane did to Tatum O'Shea goes so far beyond hurt, he is well into the realm of unforgivable. Tate says she wants him gone for good, and he quickly learns that the old saying, “you don't know what you've got till it's gone”, is most definitely true.

But Jameson has never been very good at following instructions, and when Satan decides to seek redemption, he'll go to great lengths to get it. He proposes one last game – one to end them all, if she agrees to play. He is very confident that he can win, but Tate warns him that's not possible; she will not lose again. Little does she know, Jameson is prepared to do whatever it takes. Prepared to lay the entire world at her feet. Prepared to bear his soul.

What he didn't count on, though, was handing the damn thing over.

Now he can only pray that his evil ways haven't rubbed off on Tate too much. Sometimes, it's very difficult to tell who the Devil really is …

WARNING: contains a semi-reformed devil, a woman scorned, and more Sanders than anyone has a right to witness. Also graphic sexual situations and strong language.

About The Author

Crazy woman living in an undisclosed location in Alaska (where the need for a creative mind is a necessity!), I have been writing since ..., forever? Yeah, that sounds about right. I have been told that I remind people of Lucille Ball - I also see shades of Jennifer Saunders, and Denis Leary. So basically, I laugh a lot, I'm clumsy a lot, and I say the F-word A LOT.

I like dogs more than I like most people, and I don't trust anyone who doesn't drink. No, I do not live in an igloo, and no, the sun does not set for six months out of the year, there's your Alaska lesson for the day. I have mermaid hair - both a curse and a blessing - and most of the time I talk so fast, even I can't understand me.

Yeah. I think that about sums me up.

Excerpt

~Sanders~

People often thought “Sanders” was Sanders' last name; it wasn't – his last name was Dashkevich. Sanders was the name of some long forgotten relative. Kind of exotic, really. But he never explained this story, he just let people think what they wanted. That always seemed to work out best for him.

He was thirteen when Mr. Jameson Kane found him, starving on the streets of London. He had tried to steal from Jameson. He had been very bad at pickpocketing, and Jameson had grabbed him by the collar, held him against a wall. But then he'd looked at Sanders in the strangest way, and instead of getting angry, he had offered to buy Sanders lunch.

After the meal, Jameson informed him that if Sanders was at the same spot every day, he would continue buying meals for him. Sanders was sure to be there, every day. After two weeks, they finally got to talking. Jameson asked why he was starving, living on the streets.

“I ran away from home,” Sanders had replied. Jameson had nodded.

“I know how you feel.”

“You ran away, too?

“Sort of. I did something very bad to someone back home.”

“And you felt bad, so you ran away?”

“No, I didn't feel bad, and that's why I ran away.”

They kept meeting for lunch. Jameson would have him run the odd errand, then pay him for it. Jameson would laugh - “you're my assistant now, Sanders, so we have to work out a salary.” Rented out a hotel room for Sanders to stay in, bought him new clothes.

Sanders couldn't figure it out. Who was this guy? What did he want? For a long time, Sanders thought it was sex. He kept waiting to hear his hotel room door open, see a silhouette in the light. It's what had always happened to him, in his old home. But it never happened with this man. It became very obvious, very quickly, that Jameson was not attracted to him, at all. Sure, Jameson was very adventurous, and Sanders could see that he lived by a “I'll try anything once” kind of creedo – but he wasn't gay. Jameson loved women.

“The perfect woman, Sanders. That's what I'm on a quest for - the perfect woman. Don't know if I'll ever find her,” he had slurred late one night, very drunk.

“Have you ever met a perfect woman?” Sanders asked. Jameson thought long and hard about it.

“I think I might have. But I didn't know it at the time. And she wasn't quite perfect yet.”

“Was it a long time ago?”

“Not long enough.”

Sanders wasn't gay either, but he didn't really have any interest in sex. He'd never done it. Well, at least not consensually; and never with a girl. He had always been too busy hiding his secret. Then after Jameson came along, Sanders had been too in awe of his new world, too in shock, to think about girls.

He told Jameson about the family he'd grown up with – his aunt's family, in South London. Sanders was originally from Belarus, but his parents moved to England when he was five. His family got deported, but they managed to leave him at his mother's sister's house. He never heard from his mother or father again. His aunt's husband was an Englishman, and not a very nice one. Sanders didn't want to tell Jameson that whole story.

So how could Jameson have known?

He had wanted to surprise Sanders. Wanted Sanders' family to see how well their nephew was doing, the kind of life he was now leading. Let Sanders show off a little. His family owned a small bed and breakfast, and Jameson surprised him by getting them rooms there for a night.

Something snapped in Sanders. When his uncle came to his room, tried to hold him down, tried to tell him that he would never be more than what he was in that moment, Sanders fought back – the first time he had ever done so. He wasn't a large man, but rage completely overtook him. It wasn't until Jameson was standing over him, pulling him away, that Sanders even realized he had completely beaten his uncle's head in against a radiator.

His life would be over. He would at best be deported back to Belarus. At worst, and most likely, spend the rest of his life in prison. Sanders sat in the middle of the blood and gore, and just sobbed. Jameson knelt down and grabbed onto him, held him still against his chest. Told him everything would be okay, that he didn't have to worry, that Jameson would take care of everything. And when Sanders finally calmed down, Jameson kept his promise. He magically managed to have the body disposed of; cleaned up the room. Left a large sum of money with Sanders' aunt, who never even seemed to question her husband going missing. Apparently he wasn't a nice man to anyone else, either.

They never spoke of that night again. Jameson didn't even ask, just arranged for Sanders to come back to America. Paid for him to attend the best private schools. Sanders was very smart, it turned out. He spoke fluent English, Russian, Belarusian, Polish, and German; as well as conversational French and Spanish. He could play the piano, and got as high as a Master level in competitive chess, before he gave it up. Took classes in sharp shooting. Learned how to rebuild automobile engines.

While in school, Sanders was also diagnosed with a mild form of Asperger's syndrome. It explained some of his intense focus, why he never really wanted to talk, and his minimal OCD. He hadn't thought much of it, and Jameson had just laughed, said it would give him a leg up in the world.

Because of Jameson, Sanders was able to do anything he wanted; was allowed to do anything he wanted. Jameson never questioned his choices. When Sanders turned eighteen, Jameson offered to pay for him to go to college, but he declined. He wanted to stay with Jameson. He wanted a real job with him. He wanted to be wherever Jameson was, and the best way was to take a real position as his assistant.

They'd never had an entirely normal relationship, anyway. Jameson was more comfortable, in general, treating everyone like they worked for him. That appealed to Sanders' meticulous and cold nature. Their relationship worked for them. They didn't speak a whole lot, and even when they did, they weren't prone to long conversations. But there was a bond that no one could possibly understand. Sanders loved him. Hadn't known it was possible to love a person as much as he loved Jameson Kane.

That's why it killed him to see Jameson so unhappy. Jameson didn't realize he was unhappy, but Sanders could tell. All the women, all the sleeping around, all the debauchery. Something was missing in Jameson's life, that much was clear.

Girls came and went. Some stayed a little longer than others. Most ignored Sanders. He ignored all of them. There was an opera singer from Rio that he had almost considered liking, but before he could make up his mind, she was let go. She hadn't been up to Jameson's speed, anyway. None of them were, when push came to shove.

Then Petrushka Ivanovic entered the picture. How Sanders had hated her. She was the only one who ever truly got under his skin. They would have arguments in Russian – so Jameson couldn't understand what they were saying. She called Sanders a useless, dirty, immigrant who was just leeching off of Jameson. He called her a tasteless, fake, bitch who was just another notch on Jameson's very well marked bedpost. It took a lot longer, but eventually she went away, too. He was very glad.

It wasn't too much longer before Tatum O'Shea came along. Jameson had mentioned her a couple times, usually after many late night drinks. It was obvious that she had been the reason he had run away so many years ago, that she was that “not quite perfect yet” woman. It was also obvious they hadn't known each other well – they hadn't seen each other in over seven years. It was a while before Jameson explained the history to him.

Sanders wasn't sure what to make of Tatum, at first. He had expected just another silly girl. Another woman who thought she could keep up with Jameson, but ultimately wouldn't be able to keep up at all. Or one of those types of women who only wanted Jameson for his status and money.

Not Tatum. She took everything Jameson threw at her and rolled with it. Asked for it. Wanted more of it. And she seemed oblivious to, and uncaring of, the fact that he had more money than God. For a short while, and by mutual agreement, the relationship was purely physical, and she actually seemed to like it that way.

Unusual girl.

She also completely ignored Sanders' weird, awkward, social habits. He didn't like to talk very much. Tatum liked to talk a lot, and just talked to him anyway. She paid attention to him, asked him how he was doing, what he was doing. Seemed to look right into him sometimes.

She also touched him – no one ever did that. Sanders usually hated to be touched, and it had bothered him a lot, at first. But Tate was very persistent. She held his hand, hugged him, tried to tickle him. It almost seemed as if she touched him more just because she knew he didn't like it. She was so comfortable with him, right off the bat. The same way Jameson had been. One day, she even kissed Sanders. It was a joke, a ruse, but something snapped in him. Sanders was twenty years old and had never kissed a girl, and here was a girl, laying one on him. He took the opportunity and kissed her back.

But Sanders wasn't attracted to Tatum, not like that. He could recognize that she was a very, very sexy woman. She was not shy about her body or her sexuality, and she flirted shamelessly with just about anything that moved. He wasn't entirely immune to her charms; he was heterosexual, after all. But for the most part he didn't view her that way. She was something different to him. Something special.

On top of that, it was clear from day one that she was different to Jameson, too. Also something special. No one else would have been able to tell, but Sanders could tell. She made Jameson happy. She made Sanders happy. He grew very attached to her.

When the relationship between Tatum and Jameson started to become strained, she would seek Sanders out. Their bond grew stronger. She would come into his room late at night, play chess with him, talk with him. She never rushed him to talk, just waited for the words to come out. Eventually, they did. She never asked questions, never judged anything he had to say. He fell a little in love with her. Not romantically, not sexually. He didn't know how to explain it. He just loved her.

If necessary, he would probably kill for Jameson Kane.

If asked, he would probably die for Tatum O'Shea.

When the relationship between Jameson and Tatum ended – and it ended badly – Sanders had mourned it. Jameson had been in the wrong. It was the first time he had ever asked Sanders to do things that made him uncomfortable. Things that he found repugnant. He didn't like lying. It all went to hell. He thought Jameson would admit his fault, admit he'd been wrong, then apologize. But Jameson wouldn't. It had shocked Sanders. He held Jameson to a very high standard. It was like hearing his father damn himself to hell. Sanders would have to save him.

Sometimes, Sanders felt like he had to fix everything.

MICHELE WOLFE
Adjusted Headshot

Growing up between the Rocky Mountains and the city of Denver in Colorado, gave me a life-long love of both. I suspect my experiences were similar to others my age in the 70s and 80s; summers in one-piece bathing suits; bicycle riding without a helmet; vacationing in the family station wagon; skiing down the local mountains. I am the youngest of three girls and lucky enough to be supported by friends and a loving extended family.
I loved drama, singing, gymnastics and ice skating. And I was never without a good book, no matter where I went. Soon after finishing college and becoming a teacher, I decided I wanted to explore the world. I took long road trips, spent time at Martha's Vineyard, and fell in love with the ocean and California, which eventually became my home.

Four years after moving to Los Angeles, I discovered two things that changed my life. My husband was the first. We fell in love hard and fast. Twenty-two years later, we are fully, after a lot of hard work, co-dependent and co-evolved, and very happy about both. The second discovery was a passion for teaching adults English as a Second Language in a poor immigrant community in East L.A. I'm still there, too.

My husband and I have two handsome sons, Caleb Justus and Joshua William. They are our pride and joy. Caleb is in the Army and Joshua is finishing high school. And I should mention our 'girl' Sophie, who loves running to and fro on our walks, dancing in the kitchen, her tail-wagging in joy.

Being a busy teacher, mother and wife made finding time to write a challenge. When I started my first novel, there was no space in our little home to write except at the kitchen table. I diligently carved out time on the weekends and eventually took my laptop to coffee shops and writers' groups to finish it.

When writing, I let the story and characters come to me in their own time, in their own way. I am inspired by music and art, which often influence a scene or a conversation in my stories. I hope my writing inspires others and makes people think and feel. And of course be entertained.

I am working on my next novel, also about a work of art, this time a painting at the Museum of Modern Art in Rome.

In More Than A Job, Paige works in services to people with disabilities until she loses her job and starts over. In The Return of Joy, Atlas, the yellow lab, becomes a Therapy Dog. DEBRA PARMLEY
Adjusted Headshot

Debra is a multi genre author born in Columbus, Ohio and raised in Springfield, OH. She has lived just outside Memphis, TN since 1997. Debra attended Marywood University in Scranton, PA and was the first student to win first place in two categories of the Delta Epsilon Sigma Beta Epsilon Chapter writing competition, in creative prose and in informal expository. Her poetry was published in literary journals while attending college. She holds a BA in English Literature.
When she graduated she asked her academic advisors which genre she should concentrate on. None of them would advise her because she showed strength in each area. Advice at the time and for many years afterward was to concentrate in one area and to focus on one genre. But only she could decide which one.
In 2012, Debra decided this was not working for her and forged her own path. This meant writing in more than one genre and working on more than one manuscript. She no longer believes in writers block. She believes in finding joy in the act of writing and in allowing her muse to play. For Debra, writing is about joy.

Today she teaches Creative Writing classes locally, passing on what she has learned and finding the joy in teaching as well.

Debra traveled and worked as an independent travel consultant. She has visited thirteen countries. She has worked in banking, newspaper advertising, as recycling cocoordinator for the City of Bartlett, as an office manager, and as a belly dance instructor.

When not writing, Debra enjoys dancing, history, primitive archery and medieval reenactment, travel, yoga and meditation.

It is one of her greatest pleasures to hear from her readers.

She's also not allowed in the card aisle of any grocery without an escort since she'll spend thirty minutes opening cards and laughing for no good reason. She continues to make her home in Florida in spite of the heat and mosquitos and shares her home with two cats. One of them smart, the other not so much.

JILLIAN HART

Jillian grew up on her family's homestead on Washington state, near Carnation, Washington, where she raised cattle to pay for her college tuition, rode horses through the pristine foothills of the Cascade Mountain range and scribbled stories in her spare time.
After earning an English degree from Whitman College (what better way to go through college than to constantly read books?), she traveled, worked in advertising, taught Sunday school and volunteered before becoming a writer.

When she's not hard at work on her next story, Jillian can be found chatting with a friend, stopping for a café mocha with a book in hand, and spending quiet evenings at home with her family.

LARA NANCE
Adjusted Headshot

Lara Nance grew up and lived in many cites throughout the South. She loves to write in a variety of genres, but the basis of all of her stories is a great tale that will take you on an adventure of imagination.
If you want to escape and lose yourself in a novel, you've come to the right place. Choose your genre and settle in to be entertained. From thrilling mysteries and steampunk tales to paranormal romance and adventure, she's willing to explore a variety of compelling stories full of danger and suspense, along with a touch of romance.
Her first paranormal romance, Memories of Murder, won RWA's New England Chapter's readers' choice award in 2012 for Best Paranormal Romance, as well as an award of merit as Best Book from a Virginia Author in the Holt Medallion contest. In 2013, her novel DraculaVille - Discovery in New York, won the Rudy award for best novel with romantic elements.

Most of Lara's books are in print, electronic and audio format, with others soon to follow.

Having been on the fencing team in college and now living on a sailboat convinces her that she was a pirate in another life, or possibly kin to Errol Flynn... However, due to the unfortunate demise of the romantic pirates of the past, she lives out her fantasies, thrills and adventures in her stories. Lara loves to weave interesting true historical tidbits into her fiction which invite the reader to explore further after the novel is finished.

Currently docked in Norfolk, Virginia (until the wind changes) Lara enjoys living on her sailboat and spends time reading, of course writing, indulging a variety of artistic endeavors, cooking and sailing with her husband, Joe and their Yorkie, Rio.

ANGELA KNIGHT
Adjusted Headshot

I have been writing erotic romance since 1996, when my first novella appeared in Secrets Vol. 2. In June, 2004, Jane's Warlord, my first novel, was published, followed by FOREVER KISS in July, 2004 the anthology HOT BLOODED in September, and MASTER OF THE NIGHT in October. MASTER OF THE MOON, my next book, hit the USA Today list for three weeks, much to my amazement. Since then I've been writing like a lunatic and having a wonderful time.
I've been married to a wonderful man for more than twenty years now. He's a senior investigator with our county sheriff's office. As a result, I know an awful lot of cops, which is one reason I love putting police procedural elements in my fiction. I also spent ten years as a reporter, which gave me a collection of war stories you would not believe.

My husband Mike and I have one son, Anthony, who is in his twenties now.

Synopsis

Jamaican Temptation - Can you resist!

Shopaholic Kyra Mays decides to shop for a rich man on her Jamaican vacation. Instead, she meets Justin Lance, a white reggae singer who’s nearly as poor as the orphans he devotes his life to helping. Overwhelmed by his magnetism, she decides to have a fling with him.

All that matters to Justin is being a perfect Rastafarian. He vows to avoid succumbing to temptation with the dark beauty at all costs. Unable to keep their hands off each other, they forge a bond that is just as emotional as physical as they explore their differences on the lush island of Jamaica. But Justin’s secret will put their ability to compromise through an impossible test.

Excerpt

Kyra sipped her yellow, frosty drink when it arrived, tasting pineapple, rum, and sugar. “Just what I thought. Lame. I told you we should have gone to Grand Cayman instead.”
“But Jamaica has more beauty,” Latasha insisted. “Did you see those mountains as we flew in? I already have ideas for at least ten paintings.”
“You’re such an artist. Grand Cayman has a zillion banks. That’s my kind of art.”
“Maybe we can tour a coffee plantation tomorrow,” Latasha suggested. “I want to see the island from up high, and you could meet a rich plantation owner.”
Kyra grinned for the first time since she’d strolled into this boring bar. “Me and a white plantation owner? I’m not so sure I like the sound of that.”
So why did her thighs clench under her black-and-gold striped sundress? She’d fantasized about getting intimate with a white man, but could she actually do it for real? As long as his money was green, she wasn’t too particular about her dream man’s skin color. It paid to have an open mind.
Both women focused on the stage when the band launched into the next song. The reggae beat drifted through Kyra’s body, washing away the frantic rhythm of her life and replacing it with something slower, sexier…. She found herself swaying in her seat as if rocked by an invisible tide.
In addition to the male lead singer, the band included a guy each on drums, keyboard, and bass guitar. A teenaged male swished a flag around. No white men there. Each had dreadlocks or braids of varying lengths.
Wait a minute. The lead singer had paler skin than the others. He was either mixed race or a white guy with a tan. He was so slim and lithe as he swayed to the music he appeared pretty young. Condensation dripped over Kyra’s fingers as she clutched her glass.
When the lights rotated and swept the stage, she caught a glimpse of blue. The lead singer had blue eyes. Come to think of it, his dreadlocks were brown instead of black and not quite as puffy as the others’ hair.
“I’ll be damned,” she muttered to herself. “He is white.”
“Huh?” Latasha asked.
“The lead singer is white.”
“So?” Her friend shrugged. “I don’t think there’s any rule against white people playing reggae.”
That’s not the point. The point is…he’s hot. Damn hot.
He wore a worn, light blue shirt with the sleeves rolled up. His faded jeans had holes in them and were one step away from the rag bag. Her gaze continued to his feet, finding a pair of biblical-style sandals.
Hardly the rich man she was looking for.
